Ep 220 - Why our family secrets need to be told with Galit Atlas

Hey everyone, welcome to this episode of the Motherkind podcast, the show that's going to help you navigate the massive challenges of life as a modern mother with more confidence, clarity and self-awareness.

I have an incredible episode for you today. My guest, Dr. Galit Atlas, is a psychoanalyst, clinical supervisor in private practice in New York City and a leader in the field of relational psychoanalysis. She has published three books for clinicians and numerous articles and book chapters, including Her New York Times publication “A Tale of Two Twins” which was the winner of a 2016 Gradiva Award. Her new book Emotional Inheritance is now being translated into 17 languages.

As you might know, I am fascinated, passionate and really curious about generational work. Specifically how pain gets passed down the generations.

In this episode, We talk about Emotional inheritance, which is the name Galit gives to the trauma passed down to us from previous generations.

And while it can be a hard topic, for sure, I think it's ultimately really freeing to see ourselves as part of a way bigger picture of our lineage. It's just not talked about enough with parents and mothers.

Today's episode dives even deeper into this topic. I discovered Galit, when she was on Glennon Doyle's podcast, which is called We can do hard things.

You're going to learn:

  • how we are each haunted by our family secrets and trauma, and whether we know them or not, and how to break that cycle for future generations

  • about ncredible new research on generational trauma, which proves how it's passed down the generations genetically

  • about our unconscious need to heal what our parents couldn't and how our bodies carry, what our minds won't remember, and how we can release our bodies from that burden.

I've done some amazing episodes on this topic, a couple that really stand out are with Gabor Mate and Julia Samuel, so definitely go back and listen to those if you haven't already.

It's absolutely fascinating. I hope you love it.
