Well, here we are at Motherkind's 100th episode, I can't quite believe it! I asked you all a while ago what you thought we should do in honour of our 100th episode and very flatteringly, you suggested I do a solo episode. So, here it is.

In this week's episode, I share a bit about me, the podcast and what I've learned over the course of 100 episodes and many, many incredible guests. I share about what inspired me to start this podcast, my insights about parenting, and my thoughts on self-compassion. I will also be sharing my personal journey to parenthood and healing from childhood trauma. I‘ll be discussing some of my favourite episodes and the valuable lessons we can all learn from them.

I hope you enjoy week’s episode – and as always, we continue the conversation over on Instagram so do hop over and let us know what you thought.

You can download a transcript of this week’s episode here.

Key takeaways from this week’s episode:

How Motherkind Began:

  • I felt the imposter syndrome until I became a mother. (03:04)

  • I had a breakdown at 23 years old. (03:24)

  • This podcast was born out of frustration and in support of mothers. (06:04)

  • I feared what others would think of me after leaving the corporate world. (07:50)

The Right Attitude Towards Fear:

  • Fear is a positive thing because it means you’re closer to pushing your comfort zone. (08:46)

  • It took me a year to like the title ‘Motherkind’. However, I realized my mind was trying to stop me from doing incredible things for the most trivial reasons. (11:09)

  • Fear is an indicator that you are truly living your life. (13:04)

  • Fear is merely a feeling. On the other side of fear is everything you have ever wanted. (13:24)

Our Inner Child:

  • Understanding your inner child is essential in healing. (15:04)

  • Childhood trauma is the source of the issues that arise in adulthood. (15:27)

  • The early part of your life is the foundation of your self-esteem and self-love. (18:26)

  • Even if you aren’t abused, growing up around people that were in their own pain will affect you and cause trauma. (22:26)

  • Remember that you are not responsible for your first thought. Your second thought can become more positive and healing. (22:35)

Our Relationship with Ourselves:

  • The relationships we choose all come down to our own relationship with ourselves. (27:13)

  • We put too much pressure on ourselves to be perfect in parenting. (28:23)

  • Being a fantastic parent is all about being a role model in what it means to be human. (28:37)

  • Healing yourself is the most important thing you can do for your children, as generational trauma gets passed down. (29:28)

Lessons from My Favourite Episodes:

  • Addiction is a way to manage unresolved trauma. (33:45)

  • Being a mother responsible for another human life will inevitably change you. The word for that is matrescence. (38:50)

  • Don’t try to control who your children will be. Instead, let them be who they are. (41:34)

  • Whatever triggers us to be frustrated with our children comes from an unhealed part of us. (41:52)

  • When you can’t access that compassionate place in yourself, ask yourself, ‘What would I say to a friend in this same situation?’ (44:17)

The Future of Motherkind;

  • I will continue to advocate for the healing of mothers. (46:48)

  • I want to continue to grow this podcast with your help in sharing the message of our wise guests. (48:30)
